Blame has been a hot topic lately. From events local to my circle of friends to the presidential elections, everyone is talking about blame. Who’s fault isit when there is a problem? Where should the buck stop? To be honest, I’m not sure 100% of the time. But, I have a system that I have followed for years, and it has suited me well. Not only does this system have strong logical foundations, but it makes my life a million times easier. So, I thought that since it is so relevant to what is going on today, and that I might help others live better lives, I would share my blame philosophy with you all.
Geek Commune
We all know communism doesn’t work. There isn’t even a debate. Take any number of laborers. Now reward all those laborers with equivalent living conditions, luxuries, etc. regardless of difficulty of labor or effort and you will have problems. Because of the way our society is structured people do work which does not directly effect their lives in any way. For example a steel mill worker. He doesn’t live off the steel. His continued survival has very little to do with how good, bad or how much steel is produced. Therefore he must be rewarded with things like food and shelter in exchange for his steel making. That is the way things work. So unless you are a subsistence farmer or some such communism will not work. Simply because people will have no move to work if they are guaranteed to get an equal share no matter what. And the no matter what does not hurt them in the least.
The Nintendo DS Killer App
The hot issue in gaming today is the new portable war. The game industry just loves wars. First there was Atari, it was the only choice. Then came NES, again the only choice. There was just no arguing. But when the 16 bit era began there were two, the SNES and the Genesis. Sega vs. Nintendo. The NES made a game console a staple in any family household. For children who had one it was the ultimate toy. I had plenty of other toys, but when I was a kid, the video game consoles got the most use for the most hours. It was also the most expensive if you added in all the games. And since not everyone is rich, they can usually afford to get only one. Thus, when there are multiple consoles to choose from, people must decide. Thus, wars begin.
Ultimate Desktop Project
A ways back I had me a distro rodeo. I tried every Linux distribution under the sun until I settled on Gentoo. I know run 4 Gentoo boxes, 3 at home 1 at work. I chose Gentoo because of three things. First off it is as close to linux from scratch as you can get without actually doing everything in the world manually. Second it is source based so I can make compile time configuration changed not possible in binary distros. Third, the portage package management system lets me customize the system to the finest grain. I realize there are faults in this system such as long compilation times. However, it works for me. I can also respect other distros like Debian, Lunar Linux, etc. because they provide many of the same benefits. But I can’t respect Mandrake and Fedora as much anymore. Although they aren’t nearly as bad as windows, they can’t touch the others in terms of customizability and control. What it comes down to is that you can get an absolutely perfect system that matches your needs and desires flawlessly if you put in time and effort. This is part of the Gentoo philosophy.
Farenheit 9/11
I wasn’t going to post about the movie or anything, but slashdot happens. Here is a post I made that somehow got moderated to 5, as many of my posts do. The Post.
Habits and Routine
There is a webcomic I read called “Boy on a Stick and Slither” or boasas for short. The latest comic seen here addresses an issue that has come up a lot for me lately. This issue is most prominent in the book I am currently reading entitled “The Fourth Way”. It is very obvious to me that my life is a routine. I do mostly the same thing day in and day out. Sometimes the routine changes and a new phase in my life begins. I can separate my entire life by routines and it worries me.
90% Linux
Ok, so my computer was in desperate need of a rebuild. I was running out of drive space on the disk where I keep all my mp3s. Also I had a really bad kernel configuration on my gentoo partition. Not only that, but too much KDE got in my system because I forgot an option in a config file. Before this week I was a 50/50 user. I would boot my computer to windows to play games. I had firefox, thunderbird, gaim and winamp/xmms in both OSes. So until I had to do some coding or such that I couldn’t do in windows I would stay there. Then I would stay booted in Linux until it was time to play a game again. The game usually had to be Steam because Puzzle Pirates runs in both. So I took the opportunity of this rebuild to try to be 90% linux instead of 50%. This is that story. Only computer geeks may be interested.
