So I got my parents on the fedora core 3 and they think its the awesome. They aren’t computer masters, but they know how to use one and have things they use it for. And compared to their windows experience their Linux experience is apparently wonderful.
Gaim Log URL Extractor Syndication
Just now I finished writing a program that clocks in at under 60 lines of ruby code. What it does is parse through all of my gaim logs for the current day. Then it takes any URLs it finds in those logs and creates an RSS feed out of them after removing duplicates. This is very handy for me because the links go into live bookmarks in firefox. It is handy for other people who want to see what sites me and my contacts are talking about.
Ultimate MMO: Part 2
If you didn’t read the first part of my MMO series, you should. In it I talk about a few of the resons that moderm MMO’s suck and what can be done to improve them. I also allude to an idea I had for a new MMO, to be revealed in part 3, which if I ever make it will blow every existing MMO out of the water. In this part I’m going to talk about the reasons people play MMOs and how MMOs reflect western society.
Ultimate Desktop Project Part 2
Awhile ago I made a post here about my ultimate desktop project. Well, I’ve made a lot of progress since then. fvwm is now my window manager of choice. I would say that barring serious innovation in graphical user interfaces I have achieved about 85% success in getting my ideal desktop environment. There are still a few things I have to do like optimizing the menu structure, reorganizing the panel, and other tidbits. But as far as the general layout and functionality is concerned I’ve got a pretty much perfect wm, for me that is.
Parents on Linux
So my parents, like most of yours I bet, have the spy-ware. Their computer was in shambles. The last time I went home, which was in November for my mother’s 50th birthday, it was only for a few days. So I did some ad-aware, windows update and a defrag to make the PC last until Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving I realized something evil called Cool-WWW was still there, even though I removed it. What a bastard this was, it forced IE to visit a crummy search page no matter what you did. Firefox helped them get through those tough times.
Why I Like Linux
There are plenty of reasons to like Linux. You can like its freeness. You can like its power and the control it gives you over your computer. The list goes on and on. Some people don’t like Linux, don’t know about it or don’t want to like it even though they might. There are many reasons why I personally like it and use it, specifically Gentoo Linux, as my OS of choice. And why for almost a year now I have only used windows on rare occasions, and it has been relegated to a 10 gig partition. And Steam and Nero Burning Rom are the only applications which are installed on that partition.
Ultimate MMO: Part 1
OK. So if you know me, you know what I think of most MMO games. In short, I despise all the ones I have played, except Puzzle Pirates and Achaea. But, I have not discounted the idea that a video game, played online, with tons of players cannot be good. Instead I have searched far and wide for the idea of the perfect MMO. Ladies and Gentlemen, I may have found it. But, before I tell it to you, we must start at the beginning of the story. If you do not understand why I believe that almost every MMO sucks you will not understand why my new idea is so great. And you will not appreciate the work of art that it will become. In the very best scenario I will have investors who will fund me to make this game and you will see it on the market. At the worst it will be my lifes work and I will finish it in many moons. Somewhere in-between someone steals my idea and I sue them. Yay, Creative Commons license. But you wont hear my idea until Part 3, so ha!
